People can often gain clarity in these areas during dreaming. The aroma of Jatamansi is earthy, woody, and sweet.

According to Ayurveda Jatamansi has a special quality (Prabhava) to help with mental and psychological issues. It is said to help us deal with emotional disturbances, especially those that are associated with excess Vata/wind (anxiety, worry, nervousness, fatigue, poor sleep, etc) as well as excess Pitta/fire (anger, rage, irritability). Jatamansi being in the Valerianaceae family has similar effects as Valerian but is not heavy and dulling like Valerian.

In China, a similar plant Nardostachys Chinensis as well as N. jatamansi, is widely used as an analgesic herb. Its Chinese name is Gang Song meaning“sweet pine”. According to TCM Materia Medica, it is traditionally used for treating patients who have damaged their spleen by excessive worrying, which manifests as a feeling of oppression in the chest, with epigastric and abdominal distention and pain, and poor appetite. The oil of N. jatamansi can also be helpful in treating the pattern of heart fire in TCM. The herb is warm but not hot, sweet but not stagnating, and regulates qi, having a quality similar to some other fragrant herbs, such as cyperus (xiangfu), saussurea (muxiang), sandalwood (tanxiang), and aquilaria (chenxiang), which have similar applications in treating pain.
